About Precious Metals

About Precious Metals
Filigree

Jewel work of a delicate kind made with twisted threads usually of gold and silver or stitching of the same curvy motif. It oftens suggests lace, and is most popular in French fashion decoration from 1660 to the present. It is now exceedingly common for ajoure jewellery work to be mislabelled as filigree. While both have many open areas, filigree involves threads being soldered together to form an object and ajoure involves holes being punched, drilled, or cut through an existing piece of metal.

.925 Sterling Silver

is an alloy of silver containing 92.5% by weight of silver and 7.5% by weight of other metals, usually copper.  Fine silver (99.9% pure) is generally too soft for producing large functional objects; therefore, the silver is usually alloyed with copper to give it strength, while at the same time preserving the ductility and beauty of the precious metal.

.950 Sterling Silver

95.0 silver contains 95 percent silver and 5 percent copper or other metal, and is generally found in peruvian jewelry.

Gold

About 65 percent of all processed gold is used in the arts industry, mainly to make jewelry.  Gold's one drawback for use in industry is that it is a relatively soft metal. To combat this weakness, gold is usually alloyed with another member of the metal family such as silver, copper, platinum, or nickel.

White Gold

While pure gold is yellow in color, gold can also appear to have other colors. White gold is an alloy of gold and at least one white metal, usually nickel or palladium. Like yellow gold, the purity of white gold is given in carats.
